Pipe Relocation Under Sliding Doors: Essential Renovation Guide

Installing a new sliding door or opening up your living space to an outdoor area is one of the best ways to upgrade your home. However, during renovations, homeowners often hit an unexpected snag: existing water pipes running directly through the doorway frame.
That’s exactly what happened on a recent job we completed. Here is how we cleared the path for a seamless door installation while keeping the home’s plumbing safe and secure.
The Problem: Exposed Pipes Blocking the Frame

The existing water lines were running through the timber framing and brickwork right where the new door sill track needed to sit.
Leaving pipes like this creates major risks:
Door track obstruction: The new door frame simply cannot sit flat or seal properly.
Friction and leak hazards: Heavy foot traffic over a door frame can press against exposed pipes, causing wear and potential water leaks inside your walls or under the floor.
The Solution: A Neat, Recessed Relocation
To solve this, we had to carefully re-route the water lines completely out of the way.
Here’s what we did step-by-step:
Site Protection: We covered the indoor flooring with heavy-duty drop sheets to keep dust and debris off the customer’s floors.
Precision Channelling: We carefully chipped back the brickwork underneath the sill level to create a secure recess for the new lines.
Pipe Relocation: We re-routed the water lines lower into the brick channel, ensuring they sit completely clear of the future door track.
Protection Layer: We re-applied a heavy-duty moisture barrier over the brickwork to protect both the masonry and the pipes.

The Result: A Clear Path for the Builders
With the plumbing now safely tucked out of sight below the subfloor level, the doorway frame is 100% clear. The builders can now install the new sliding door smoothly, with no risk of damaging the plumbing beneath.
