Water hammer is one of the most common complaints we get from owners of older Melbourne homes — and one of the most overlooked. That loud bang or thud every time a tap shuts off isn’t just annoying. Left alone, it puts real stress on your pipes and fittings over time.
The Problem
A 20-year-old house, loud water hammer every time a tap is shut off. Keeping the family awake and getting worse over time.
Water hammer happens when fast-moving water is suddenly stopped — the pressure has nowhere to go and slams against the pipe wall. In older homes with rigid copper lines, those pipes vibrate and slap against the timber frame, making that heavy banging noise.
What We Did
Inspected the full water supply system and checked incoming water pressure.
Installed a Pressure Limiting Valve (PLV) at the meter to bring the high pressure down to a safe, compliant level.
Got rid of the old, rigid copper lines that were causing the heavy vibration.
Renewed the line using flexible PEX piping running from the front all the way inside to absorb the pressure spikes permanently.
Tested all outlets after — smooth, quiet, and absolutely zero hammer noise!
Why Water Hammer Gets Worse Over Time
Every bang is a pressure spike hitting your pipes, joints, and fittings. In a 20-year-old home with original pipework, those joints aren’t getting any younger. Repeated hammer can loosen connections, crack fittings, and eventually cause leaks inside walls — the kind you don’t find until the damage is already done.
