If you’re upgrading your kitchen or installing a new gas cooktop, the gas isolation valve position matters more than most people realise. We recently relocated a gas valve and regulator in a Melbourne home to bring the installation back into compliance — here’s what was involved and why it needed doing.
The Problem
The existing gas isolation valve was positioned directly behind the cooktop — inaccessible in an emergency and non-compliant with current standards. The regulator was also crammed into a tight space, creating poor gas flow and unsafe operating conditions.
Common reasons a valve relocation is needed:
- Valve positioned behind a hot stove or cooktop — a serious hazard if you need to shut off gas quickly
- Regulator in a space too tight for safe operation
- Kitchen renovation or new cooktop requiring different clearance
What We Did
- Turned off the main gas supply and tested the system before starting
- Extended the copper gas lines into the adjacent side cabinet
- Installed a new gas isolation cock and regulator neatly inside the cabinet for quick, unobstructed access
- Leak tested using soapy water solution and digital pressure decay testing — 100% leak-free
- Verified the full installation against VBA and Energy Safe Victoria requirements
Gas Work Is Not DIY
In Victoria, all gas fitting must be done by a licensed gasfitter. An unlicensed gas job can void your home insurance and put your household at serious risk. If your valve is behind your cooktop or your regulator hasn’t been looked at in years, get it checked.
