Is Your Plumbing Ready for a Melbourne Winter?

Melbourne winter puts more strain on your plumbing than any other season. Hot water systems run longer, drains slow down with leaves and grease, and bathrooms hold more moisture than usual. Here’s what we see every winter — and what you can do before it turns into an emergency call.

None of these start as emergencies. They start small — and get ignored until the middle of winter, when it’s coldest and booking a plumber takes longer.

What to Check Before Winter Hits Hard

Hot water system — if it’s over 8 years old, or you’ve noticed it taking longer to heat up, get it looked at now. Storage tanks typically last 8–12 years; continuous flow units 15–20.
Drains — slow draining sinks or showers usually mean a partial blockage building up. Leaves, grease, and tree root growth all get worse through winter.
Bathroom moisture — closed windows and constant hot showers in winter mean higher humidity. Hidden leaks behind tiles or under shower bases often go unnoticed until mold or water damage shows up.

Why Winter Makes Everything Worse

Cold weather doesn’t cause plumbing problems — it exposes the ones that were already there. A hot water system on its last legs will usually fail when it’s working hardest, which is exactly when you need it most. The same goes for drains. Catching these issues in autumn or early winter means a planned fix instead of an emergency one.
